In Memory of Lanita Dawn McGee

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:7

The Celebration of a Life Well Lived shared highlights from Lanita’s journey before and after her diagnosis with NF2 (Neurofibromatosis type 2) which occurred the year she graduated from undergraduate school with a Bachelor of Arts in Business with a minor in Computer Science. Being informed that her future could possibly include hearing impairment, she, proactively, went right out and signed up for sign language classes at St. Rita School for the Deaf in Cincinnati. She taught her parents and offered to teach others.

For 24 years, she endured more than 14 landmark surgeries, radiation, various medications, and infusion therapies that stunted tumor growth and alleviated a variety of accompanying symptoms. Until recently, as a homeowner, she pursued continuing education opportunities, served as a business consultant to helping ministries and encouraged others, even from her hospital bed. Testifying to her tenacity are 3 friends (“sista-girls”) who maintained their friendship as confidants through high school, college and into adulthood.

Lanita’s early years included a love of music, musical accomplishments in flute, violin and piano, and participation in choirs. As a student of the Bible early in life, she maintained her faith in God, hope, and looked to the comfort and wisdom of His Word. Her extracurricular activities brought out leadership abilities as she participated in modeling training and experience, young professional and Christian youth groups.

Later, she earned an additional bachelor’s degree in dietetics. During the 7 years at Proctor & Gamble there was travel, vacations, entrepreneurial endeavors that used her knowledge and skills to help others in the areas of business, information technology and nutritional consultation. Throughout these years, she established and maintained relationships in the NF2 Crew community that spans within and outside of the U.S.

The NF2 motto is “Never Give Up!” Lanita included in her will instructions to direct a portion of her estate to NF2 research for a cure.

Thank you for joining her ongoing fight to cure NF2.
